Yunnan Province (Southwest China) Dali
We found Yunnan province to be perhaps the most interesting area in all of China. This area encompasses terrain as diverse as the Tibetan highlands to the north and tropical rainforest in the southern part of Yunnan. Bev and I used Kunming as our gateway to the more unique and remote areas of Yunnan. Our first stop was the miniature city of Dali. Located at 6200 feet in elevation, Dali is a great place to relax and chill out. Although Dali is unknown to most foreign travelers, it is truly fascinating with its Bai minority group, preserved cobbled streets in the old section, and unique local markets, set in the back drop of the snowcapped peaks of the Cangshan Mountains. We also enjoyed a two hours boat ride in the blue waters of adjacent Erhai Lake. The Bai minority group date back 3000 years and were part of a sino-Tibetan ethnicity. The women wear distinctive traditional costumes and are ubiquitous throughout the Dali area. We have great memories of these friendly and out going ladies.
